Palace of Grand Master
In the long and colourful history of Rhodes, apart from the ancient Greek founders, there is perhaps no other group that left more of an impression on the landscape of the island than the Knights of the Order of Saint John, or the Knights Hospitaller. Nowadays, linked mostly with the island of Malta, before relocating there, they were settled on Rhodes.
When the island became headquarters of the Knights of St John in the 14th century, they constructed a palace for the order’s Grand Master. The citadel stands to this day and can be found at the end of the Street of the Knights in the Old Town of Rhodes. According to a recent study, the palace was built on the exact spot where the Colossus of Rhodes once stood.
